Home for the Holidays

This month’s Design Minds question comes from a fan looking to get her home holiday party ready:

“I’m hosting a large holiday party at my place this year. How can I lay out my living room and patio areas to create a comfortable, welcoming vibe?”

Hosting a party at your home during the holidays can be a stressful experience. To make your life a little easier, Tiare Pinto shares a few tips for transforming your everyday living space into a holiday haven.

  • Create an open floor plan
The party starts the moment your guests walk through your front door, so greet them with a memorable sight. Create an open floor plan to connect your indoor space with your outdoor space, placing your sofas across from each other to promote a more open feel. Take inspiration from the living room setup in our Bay House project that extends into the outdoors, with pocket doors opening to a beautiful ocean view. To take advantage of this breathtaking view, we rearranged the living rom furniture to create this open floor plan and direct guests’ eyes toward the sparkling Kaneohe Bay waters.

  • Rearrange your furniture to facilitate conversation
When hosting a holiday party, reconfigure your spaces to accommodate a larger group. Create a few comfortable zones for people to sit, stand around, and feel at home while spending time with their fellow guests. Now that the TV isn’t the focal point, maneuver the furniture to open up to your home’s outside space.

For the lanai of our Ohana Place project, we designed a cozy outdoor living space with comfy L-shaped couch and Lazy Boy rocking chairs, arranging the furniture to encourage conversation. We also added a patio dining table as an additional space for a small group to gather, preferably near a batch of refreshing cocktails!

  • Breathe color into your space
Use decorative pillows with bold colors or patterns to dress up your ordinary furniture pieces. Our Shorebreak project offers guests seating areas that pop with island flair…they even serve as a conversation starter! These furniture pieces are gorgeous to look at, and provide guests with ample spaces to hang out, relax, and talk story.

  • Set the mood with the proper lighting
Good lighting can make or break the ambiance of your party. Make your guests feel comfortable by ensuring your space is well lit with layered light like the kitchen of our Kamaʻaina Contemporary project. We combined CREE LED recessed lighting with light from soft, frosted glass Philips Forecast Isobar pendants to create a luxurious, inviting space. Functional and decorative, these gorgeous lighting fixtures are bound to make your thanksgiving spread look as delicious as it tastes.
