A well-designed lanai is a wonderful addition to any home. Whether you’re enjoying spectacular ocean views in Hawaii or warming yourself by a fire pit along the coast, a lanai—or outdoor porch or veranda—is sure to give your home an extra dash of comfort and charm! Wondering how to create your dream lanai? Check out these design tips and take inspiration from our stunning Ohana Place project!

1. Upholster existing furniture with weather-resistant fabrics

Sectional and recliners with weather-resistant fabric
If you’re looking for ways to revive old furniture pieces, consider recovering them with high-quality, weather-resistant fabrics.

In our Ohana Place project, we reupholstered an existing sectional with Sunbrella’s Spectrum Mist fabric and existing recliners with Sunbrella’s Marcello Seaglass fabric. Sunbrella Upholstery is a wonderful collection that offers homeowners bright color options that resist fading and have a long life span. Sunbrella is also UV, water, and mildew resistant—perfect for your outdoor space!

2. When furniture shopping, think versatility

When making purchases for your living room or kitchen, consider multipurpose furniture options that can be used in a variety of settings.

Multipurpose stools made of UV-resistant fabric
In the kitchen of the Ohana Place, we positioned Kravet Soleil counter stools around the extended dining room table. These stools can be easily moved from the kitchen to the lanai when you’re entertaining guests. Best of all, Kravet fabrics also boast UV protection from all weather scenarios. Don’t feel limited to the floor plan that you’ve designed in a room at any given time. Think about the long-term when you’re looking to buy new furniture.

3. Take advantage of built-ins

The addition of an outdoor kitchen can drastically change the vibe of your lanai, and of your home as a whole.

When undertaking the Ohana Place project, we used built-in appliances by GE Monogram, including an undercounter refrigerator, double-drawer refrigerator, and wine unit. These minimalist appliances have a big impact on the resulting outdoor kitchen, and drastically elevate the style of the lanai.

4. Look for ways to add more of a breeze

In Hawaii, we’re lucky enough to take advantage of the refreshing trade winds that float through our islands. Never underestimate the power of additional breeze!

Consider incorporating sturdy yet luxurious fans like the Minka Aire Gauguin fan, as seen in the Ohana Place.

The Minka Aire fan is also approved for outdoor and wet applications, making it the perfect addition to any tropical lanai.

The possibilities are endless with outdoor spaces! The Ohana Place lanai is just one example of a luxurious, island-inspired space. We hope our projects will inspire you to tackle a new design project, maybe even beyond the four walls of your home.
